Digital CB Threat Mapping

Due: April 14, 2025

Chemical and biological (CB) contamination on surfaces such as vehicles is often not visible to the naked eye. When potential CB contamination is identified, it takes significant resources including manpower, time, and cleaning solution to decontaminate while also putting personnel at significant risk of contamination. Therefore, digital maps of the contamination on surfaces and battlefield terrain are being combined with autonomous robotics to develop standoff decontamination, decontamination assurance, and threat mitigation capabilities to decrease resource requirements, cognitive load, and overall risk. Previous work has developed an initial contamination mapping computer vision model with visualization in the Tactical Assault Kit (TAK). The final software prototype aims to increase the survivability of CB Operators by developing digital maps of contamination that guide robotics platforms to autonomously conduct standoff decontamination.

This opportunity requires membership in the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD) Consortium. This Consortium releases numerous opportunities throughout the year, so even if this one may not be right for you, we strongly encourage you to join the consortium so you are ready for the next opportunity.
