Preventative treatments and vaccines offer proactive solutions to biological threats: however, many of the current countermeasures are decades old. These prophylactic platforms have stagnated through single threat targeting which is potentiated by the “plug and play” nature of existing technologies. The treadmilling of existing prophylactic platforms from virus to virus has prevented new prophylactic strategies from emerging. The Joint Science and Technology Office (JSTO) seeks technological advances in multivalent preventative biological countermeasures in two independent thrust areas: 1) improving existing platform technologies that address multiple threats OR 2) develop new pre-treatment, or vaccine, platforms that address multiple threats.
